DIY Butter Cow Sculpting Challenge

Holy Cow! Did you know the first Butter Cow at the Ohio State Fair was sculpted over a century ago? Designed to celebrate Ohio’s dairy farmers, this tradition is enjoyed by more than 500,000 visitors each year at the Ohio State Fair.

You can follow these steps to create your own mini Butter Cow at home during any time of the year! When you’re done, use it as a centerpiece for a holiday meal or family gathering, or repurpose it by making delicious Herb-Infused Butter and spread it on our Homemade Bread with Honey.

  1. Tried to make the cow, but it ended up looking kind of like something from the prehistoric era. Soooo, we tried something different. We got a rimmed cookie sheet and flattened and smoothed the butter onto the pan. After the butter had a brief stay in the freezer, we used cookie cutters and made some really neat shapes – flowers, hearts, little animal shapes – it was fun. Kids enjoyed putting butter flowers on their toast and on their pancakes.
    I think for the holidays, I will go with clovers, pumpkins and witch’s hats, turkeys and of course for Christmas the ever popular gingerbread man.
    I think you would enjoy doing this type of butter art too.
