3 Reasons Your Student Needs Breakfast
by Karen Bakies RD LD FAND
Research shows that when kids eat breakfast, they have higher test scores, improved daily attendance, and better class participation.
However, only 35.3% of Ohio teens report eating breakfast every day according to the Center for Disease Control.
Eating a nutritious breakfast every day can benefit students by impacting:
- Test scores – Studies show students who eat breakfast score higher on standardized math tests. And not only do they perform better, they’re ready to learn!
- Daily attendance – Studies also show students who eat breakfast attend more days of school per year on average, and students who attend class more regularly are more likely to graduate from high school.
- Nutrition – Eating a nutritious breakfast that includes lowfat or fat-free milk helps meet daily nutrient needs. In fact, milk is the number one source for calcium, vitamin D and potassium, three nutrients that many kids (and adults) are lacking according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
School breakfast is a convenient and nutritious option for busy families or kids who don’t feel hungry as soon as they wake up. It’s available to all students regardless of socio-economic background and is a great nutritional value!
