The NLSM Calculator bases its results on the comprehensive 2001 School Milk Pilot Test. For a complete explanation of the test and its findings, you may visit the "New Look of School Milk" section of our Web site: www.drink-milk.com.

The Calculator is intended to serve as a guide. The results generated are not guaranteed and actual results may vary from what is projected.
The School Milk Pilot Test found that implementing the New Look of School Milk, or NLSM, will increase school meal participation by 1.5% in elementary schools and almost 5% in secondary schools. Therefore, the NLSM Calculator takes the current numbers for participation in your lunch programs in elementary and secondary schools and multiplies those numbers by their respective increases. Based on your district's Free/Reduced Percentage, the Calculator then figures the amount of additional federal reimbursement dollars you would receive from those new students participating in your meal program.
The Calculator also figures in the amount of additional income you would experience in your à la carte and vending programs, and puts all additional income into a balance sheet. That additional income is then weighed against the increase in costs, and your result is calculated for one school year.
To use the Calculator, e nter the required information and then follow the instructions. Use the Tab key to move from cell to cell and the Enter key to move you to the next page. Once you have begun using the Calculator, move all the way through without using the Back button until you reach the last page. Once you are finished, if you would like to start over using a new set of variables, you may click on the "Start Over" button on the last page. You will be taken back to the first page of the Calculator with your prior information cleared.
Please Note: When you enter your Free/Reduced Percentage, the Calculator gives you a breakdown of the number of Free students, Reduced students and Paying students. Those numbers are based on the nation's average breakdown for how many Free students and Reduced students make up the Free/Reduced Percentage. The calculator uses federal reimbursement rates from the 2006-2007 school year.
