June is Dairy Month
Originating in 1937, June Dairy Month is a time to celebrate the dairy community and honor our nation's dairy farmers for the wholesome, nutritious milk and dairy foods they provide. Dairy farmers work around-the-clock to produce safe, high quality milk by caring for their animals and protecting their environment.
Affordable, nutritious milk
Nutrient-rich dairy foods are one of the most economical sources of nutrition. In fact, few foods deliver dairy’s powerhouse of 9 essential nutrients in such an affordable, appealing and readily available way. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans encourages children and adults 9 years and older to enjoy three servings of low-fat or fat free milk, cheese or yogurt every day. And at about 25 cents per glass, milk is a nutritional bargain!
Safe, nutritious milk begins with healthy cows. Dairy farmers are dedicated and committed to providing high-quality milk by caring for their animals. They work closely with veterinarians and nutritionists to keep their cows and calves healthy and well-nourished. Nutritious diets, healthy living conditions, and good veterinary care are all essential when it comes to producing safe, wholesome, nutritious milk.
Dairy farmers live where they work and are committed to protecting their land and their communities. They understand the importance of environmental responsibility and employ a wide range of environmentally sound practices on their farms, including manure-management plans, water-recycling systems, conservation tillage, and routine water testing.
