At the same time, consumers crave indulgent foods, as well as products that are quick and easy to prepare. Research shows that more than half of teenagers and nearly half of adults rely on frozen snacks for anytime, on-the-go meals. However, consumers don’t want to sacrifice taste for convenience.

At the meeting, DMI showcased three prototypes that meet these trends:

  • A handheld strudel filled with brie cheese and smoked chicken that featured U.S.-produced specialty cheese
  • A mini-cheesecake served in a dark chocolate cup that, by using dairy ingredients, offered consumers permission to indulge by creating a product that is lower in fat and calories, but higher in protein and calcium
  • A dulce de leche sauce, made with four dairy ingredients, that delivers a caramel flavor when used with fruit, as a dessert topping, or spread on other foods

"Using dairy ingredients offers manufacturers the combined benefits of functionality, nutrition and great taste," said Alan Reed, DMI senior vice president, U.S. manufacturing and ingredient marketing. "We know from research that consumers look for products that contain dairy ingredients because of their value, health benefits, great taste, and convenience."
